** Wire was added to Dryden and Kewlona in the tight areas.

Picked up sticks and shifted the Texas Tigers from Vacation

*** Sabre is holding out for another week of vacation, the tunnel is open in hopes he will go home overnight.

Vacation got mowed and weed whacking done.  (For a funny photo about that check yesterday’s Big Cat Updates; it is in the Viewer Pix section.)

The Keeper Cafe now has a roof over the deck to hold off the sun at lunch time.

* Note To Viewers:  Keepers and interns clean the cats’ enclosures every day, 365 days a year.  They even have a poop collection chart to make sure every cat poops daily.  However, on a quite regular basis the cats get locked out of a section of their enclosure so keepers and interns can go in do a deep cleaning such as raking, changing den bedding, landscaping, getting fallen twigs off the roofs, etc.

** Note To Viewers:  The cats here do not share common walls because that would allow them to grab each other through the wire and cause injuries or worse.  Our enclosure have enough space between them for keepers to walk all the way around the outside, daily to check the cat, the grounds, and the wire.  Between a few of the older enclosures, for the smaller cats that walk area between the cats is not as wide as with the newer enclosures.  While it is plenty of room to walk between the enclosures, safely, without a cat from either side reaching a keeper we have added extra wire that has smaller squares in those areas just to be another layer of safety for the keepers.

If you are familiar with Keisha Tiger‘s story, you have seen the results of cats who share common walls with their neighbors.  In her previous home, Keisha lost her tail and part of her ear to the lions who lived next door to her.

*** Note To Viewers:  LOL, Sabre is picking up Joseph’s old trick of squeezing a few more days into his vacation.  Cats do things in their own time and we have to just patiently out wait Joseph and now it seems Sabre, too.

 Big Cat Models

Big Cat Model Koruna Pathak:  In Dubai with my Mosaic Tiger shirt and the Burj Al Arab in the background

I got the Mosaic Lion shirt as a Christmas gift last year after visiting BCR, for the second time. Quality of the t-shirt was very soft.

I was so happy to make my acquaintance with Seth, Andy, Jasmine, Gabrielle, Priya and Charaka when I visited in December. By then Priya was recuperating from her dangerous surgery and was
resting comfortably.. all I saw was her tail..(LOL)

Charaka was a sweetheart and I spent as much time as I could just looking into his eyes.. What a darling.. and I wept silently when he crossed over. Andy, Seth and Gabrielle were just chillin and I was so happy that they found their forever home at BCR.

Jasmine was so sweet to chuff at my group.. that was a first for me..a tiger chuff.. loved it.

This spring I wore my Mosaic Tiger shirt on my trip to Asia and Dubai and had a lot of people ask me about the beautiful tiger face. It was my time to “educate” as much as I could about BCR and the wonderful work they do. It was my shirt to wear on my 20hr flight back from Asia.

Thank you, BCR, for the work you do.

Viewer Scotti Cohn: Aaaaand — it’s “cuteness overload time” (again) in the Kitten Cabana at Big Cat Rescue.
Big Cat Rescue fosters domestic kittens from birth up to two pounds. These kittens have been rescued from the county shelters where they were turned in to be euthanized. They’re bottle fed and cared for at night and brought to the Kitten Cabana during the day for socialization with other cats. When the kittens reach 2 pounds they are spayed, neutered and placed in permanent homes by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. If you see a kitten that you would like to adopt, please contact The Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

 Cole and Marmalade’s Corner

Cole hardly ever jumped up on the counters, but then Marm arrived on the scene and was determined to be up there as much as possible! I could have tried many other methods to deter him from being up there, but I never saw it as a big deal, so didn’t waste time and money on the issue… and I kinda think he still would have jumped up there no matter what we did, because he’s that kind of cat!

Note To Viewers:  In the comments, please share your cat / kitchen counter stories with is.

  • Do your cats get on the kitchen counters?
  • If now, what methods did you use to teach them the kitchen counters are a no no?
  • What methods work and what methods do not work?
