Big Cat Updates

Grand Opening of the Cat Walk over Tiger Lake at Big Cat Rescue today!  Now guests can look out over the lake at Seth and Andy Tigers (although Andy is still locked in the front section until he’s fully healed, which the vet says will be Wed.)

Andi Bobcat got her cone off this morning and will be going back to her Cat-a-Tat on Monday.  She had been spayed and shaved.

Sabre is home from FunCation, and Cheetaro Leopard is now out there.

Little White Dove and Running Bear are shut in the platform side.

Max and MaryAnn now have a comb that goes into their tunnel to separate them for feeding and snacking.

Babycakes:  Genets are commonly nocturnal animals, he is most active in the early morning and later in the evening as the sun goes down. We have put a fan on his cage to help with the heat but most of the day he will be laying around sleeping.  In the wild most sites say they live 8 to 10 years, in captivity can live as long as 20 years. Currently Babycakes is 22 years old.  We are giving him the best care we can, please remember we have an aging population of animals in general and as it gets hotter they all will be a lot less active and eat a lot less food. We will continue to monitor all of our animals daily as usual. Thank you all for your concern about Babycakes.

Coordinator Report for Friday, May 26, 2017

Today Banshee’s back section was cleaned up and one of the walls of his big den was knocked out. We still need to fix the den area so he will remain in the section by the tour path until repairs and upgrades are completed.

Little White Dove and Running Bear’s den section was cleaned up. The only thing left to do is add new top soil and fresh grass seed.

Additional cats have been added to the snacks board in food prep to get extra snacks.

“God made the cat in order that man might have the pleasure of caressing the tiger.” -Fernand Mery

Tigers belong in our hearts, not our homes. Petting is for cats; not wild cats, who have to be ripped from their moms to be used that way. Sport this design to start a conversation about protecting our planet’s forests for these magnificent creatures.

People Often Ask

When viewers contact us to ask questions we think it is GREAT!!  It means viewers care and viewers are thinking.  Often times so many people as similar questions that Carole creates a web page with the answer.  Today’s “People Often Ask” section is excerpts from one of those pages.

People Often Ask:  Is this or that facility good or bad?

When people ask that question we find it exciting because it means the public is now realizing some places that call themselves sanctuaries are not real sanctuaries.  When you hear the word sanctuary you would think of a facility that is safe for the animals, and safe for the public.  The word “Sanctuary” often instills a feeling that a facility puts the well-being of its animals first, and a place where animals can live in peace, safety, and comfort without fear of anything bad ever happening to them.  Sadly, many places call themselves sanctuaries but they abuse and exploit their animals.  Those facilities’ practices quite often lead to harm, discomfort, and worse for their animals.

Now the dilemma is HOW CAN YOU decide if a facility is good or not?  This is a question we get almost daily.

If it is a facility I have not heard of before I first find look on 911AnimalAbuse.com to see if the facility is listed.  But, because the bad guys frequently change the name of their facilities I then try to find out the owner’s name and again check 911AnimalAbuse.com for the owner’s name.   If I find nothing there it doesn’t always mean the facility is good it could simply mean they haven’t been added there yet.

Next, I check to see if they are verified or accredited by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).  The Global Federation of Sanctuaries only accredits real sanctuaries. It only costs a mere $150.00 per year to be a member and the application is only four pages long, so it is certainly not a huge investment of time and money. Accreditation is only granted after an on-site inspection if the facility meets the high standards of care and responsibility. The facility must continue to maintain those standards and be re-inspected regularly to insure compliance.

Here is the list of facilities verified or accredited by GFAS:  http://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/gfas/about-gfas/gfas-sanctuaries/

Here is a link to learn more about Sanctuary Standards:  https://bigcatrescue.org/sanctuary-standards/

You can also look facilities up on Charity Navigator, GuideStar.com, Independent Charities of America, GreatNonprofits etc to see how they spend your donations.

As an example look up Big Cat Rescue in Tampa and you will find:

Charity Navigator has rated Big Cat Rescue 4 Stars (their highest rating) for five years in a row as of 2016. Only 6% of the thousands of nonprofits they rate achieve the 4 star rating five years in a row.

The Independent Charities of America has certified Big Cat Rescue as one of the Best in America Charities every year since 2008.

GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews for nonprofit organizations, has named Big Cat Rescue as one of its “Top-Rated Charities” every year since the beginning of its ratings in 2010.

Note To Viewers:  Would you like MORE info on standards that real sanctuaries adhere to?
