Minister who entered tiger cage apologises

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat, who was in the midst of a row for allegedly violating the Wildlife Act by entering a tiger’s cage, today apologised for his act admitting he had committed a mistake.

Sources said Thorat spoke to Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh today on phone about the incident and is understood to have accepted his “mistake.”

They said Thorat is likely to publicly apologise for patting the tiger inside the cage at Maharajbagh zoo in Nagpur as his action had drawn flak from conservationists which said it was a violation of zoo rules and Wildlife Protection Act.

Incidentally, the Zoo authorities had given a clean chit to the minister saying “by entering the cage, he had done no wrong.”

Shocked by the incident, the ministry had demanded a report from the zoo authorities.
