As some of you may know, China has an atrocious practice of capturing
wild Asiatic Black Bears (nick named "Moon Bears"), and confining them
in tiny cages for life (often 20 years) so that their bile may be
obtained to use in traditional Chinese medicines. These bears are
kept in horrendous conditions and literally have an open wound in
their abdomen at all times so that bile can be obtained from them on a
daily basis, which is a very painful practice for these bears.
Animals Asia, a non-profit organization based out of Hong Kong,
rescues these bears so they can live out their lives at a peaceful
sanctuary. I've personally heard the general counsel speak about this
issue and the work Animals Asia does and it's very fascinating,
although extremely upsetting.
We are lucky enough to have Jill Robinson, the founder and CEO of
Animals Asia, coming all the way from Hong Kong for a speaking
engagement at Peace River Refuge & Ranch, which is an exotic animal
sanctuary, located at 2545 Stoner Lane, Zolfo Springs, FL 33890. The
event is May 18th, from 11am until 4:30. There is a suggested
donation of $15 and this includes the lecture (which will begin at
12:15pm), a tour of the Sanctuary at 1:30 and a light lunch. There
will also be a silent auction.
The $15 is worth just hearing Jill Robinson speak about the atrocities
committed in bear bile farms in China. This is an issue that most
Americans have no knowledge of and I really think we should educate
ourselves about animal abuse that's occurring in other countries,
especially when the "other country" is hosting the 2008 Olympics. I
can also guarantee that the tour of the Peace River Refuge & Ranch
will be extremely fascinating and enjoyable.

I really hope everyone will come out to tour the Sanctuary and learn
about the torturous practices that take place in Chinese bear bile
Please forward this to anyone you know that may be interested.
