It’s Big Cat Rescue’s 24th Birthday!
24 years ago today – November 4, 1992 – our founder Carole Baskin rescued her very first exotic cat. At the time Carole had no way of knowing that saving the beautiful young bobcat she named Windsong would launch a series of events that would create Big Cat Rescue, one of the world’s largest accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats.
Carole never had any intention of starting a big cat sanctuary, but fate had other ideas for her and what would become her life’s work. She owned some land in north Tampa and went to an animal auction to purchase a couple of llamas to greenbelt the property. When she walked in, a frightened six-month-old bobcat kitten was up for bids and a man standing near her was bidding on the cat. Carole asked him why he would want to buy a bobcat? He told her he was a taxidermist. Carole was horrified at the fate this beautiful cat was facing; she made sure she was the highest bidder and brought Windsong home. And as they say, the rest is history. Read more at https://bigcatrescue.org/about/how-we-started/
Windsong lived until 2010 and lives on even now as the namesake of our onsite Windsong Memorial Hospital. Every single cat that has passed through our doors has received the utmost love, care and respect, but they don’t belong in cages. Please honor Windsong and all captive exotic cats by helping us pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Learn more and take action at BigCatAct.com
Big Cat Updates
Mickey Cougar and Mac Cougar were both moved to the new cougar area today. Now all of the cages on Cougar Island can be converted for the new tigers that are coming soon and it will thereafter be called Tiger Island.
Anasazi Bobcat was supposed to go to FunCation today, but she really didn’t want to get in the transport and rather than stress her out again a week from now, we just moved her to her new cat-a-tat, where Tonga Serval used to live, before he moved.
We will now try to catch Will Bobcat so we can rennovate that whole area. We have some big plans coming for that space.
Since Anasazi didn’t want her turn in the FunCation, Jinx Leopard lucked out. We decided to fill the space with pumpkins for him since he loved the one he got for Halloween so much. Even though he’s usually pretty shy he checked out every inch of the new space, and every pumpkin. He didn’t care that three different tour groups had converged on the edge of the cage. Everyone was so thrilled to see him having so much fun.
We are preparing Mac Cougar’s cage today and hope to move Nala Serval out of the hospital and into it later today.
