Big Cat Updates

Everyone did fine during Hurricane Matthew.

Clearly, being rained in, and having Spirit Feather be such a doll all day, I didn’t get much done.

No More Tigers at LSU

mike tiger

Mike the tiger isn’t even dead yet but Louisiana State University (LSU) is already searching for the school’s next victim…a replacement tiger cub.

LSU’s live tiger mascot Mike VI (although there have been SEVEN not six tiger mascots at LSU over the years all named Mike) was diagnosed in May 2016 with a rare, incurable cancer. LSU Veterinarian David Baker DVM now says Mike’s days are numbered as additional tumors have recently been found.

While we are saddened to see any tiger pass, we are even more upset to learn that Dr. Baker has admitted to local media that he will “begin the process of finding a new live tiger cub to replace the school mascot immediately.”

LSU President F. King Alexander is also quoted in local media approving the school’s misguided decision to replace the current Mike with a new cub to be named Mike VII.  He said “the educational value of Mike is underestimated.”

What educational value? There is nothing educational about keeping a wild cat on a college campus and parading it around in a cage during LSU’s extremely loud football games as a marketing and entertainment ploy!

Both of the university’s last two tigers — Mike VI and Mike V — were obtained from animal sanctuaries which have since been shut down by the federal government for failing to provide proper care. That is not surprising because facilities that breed and sell their cubs are not true, accredited sanctuaries. It’s shameful that LSU plans to acquire yet another cub!

Take Action buttonWe really need your help with this one. Somewhere in this country a young tiger cub is about to be snatched up by LSU and forced to endure YEARS of what we deem abuse – the unimaginable stress of being carted to football games and kept on the sideline while over 100,000 people scream in the stadium.

Will you please join us in asking the decision makers at LSU to END this sickening “tradition” and let Mike VI be the last exploited tiger at LSU? Thank you!!
