Big Cat Updates

URGENT ACTION ALERT

URGENT! Please continue to sign and share our Action Alert to help save wild tigress Avni (T1) and her young cubs in India. It is very important that officials in India including the President and Prime Minister continue to receive your emails via our Alert and realize the world is watching their actions and thousands of people want Avni’s life spared. Please take action NOW as time is running out to save this wild tigress!

Avni and her two young cubs are still in grave danger – the government has not yet rescinded the shoot to kill order on this tigress. Avni is a young tigress who lives in the western forests of India with her cubs and her mate T2. She lives in an area where illegal cattle grazing and human encroachment of the forest land are rampant.

The government is alleging that 13 people found dead in the forest in the last 2 years have died from attacks by Avni, even though DNA reports show signs of a tiger attack in only one of the cases and that may not have been her. Avni has been labeled a “man-eater” or “marked tiger” while there is no solid proof or evidence of her killing those humans.

Another great day today with lots of volunteers coming out to clean feed and help with projects. It was nice to see some faces that don’t usually come on Mondays 🙂

Mike E. painted the barricade by Hoover, it looks great.  Candy and Fred got operant and enrichment sign-offs.  Cindy made sure all the cats got their afternoon sicles.  Mary J., Candy, Steph C. and some of the interns worked on Sundari’s cage throughout the day.

Cameron and Keisha ate okay today, both are liking pork and turkey breast.  We have no more pork, Kathryn is aware, so whatever we have needs to be used wisely for the pickys.  Andre ate like a champ today, for me this morning, Kathryn for the dodo and then MC at meds time.

We sent out three tours at 3:00 pm so had lots of happy guests! 🙂

360 VR Ocelot Purrfection – Purr-Fection is a female Ocelot born 5/22/96. PURRfection, and her twin brother PURRsistance, were born at Big Cat Rescue before it was known that no privately held exotic cats would ever be able to help preserve the species due to the inability to track them back to the wild. She is the epitome of the perfect looking ocelot, which explains her name. Her markings are extraordinary and demonstrate why this species was almost hunted out of existence for its fur. While a handful of cats were born here prior to 1998 we quit breeding when we learned that there are no release programs for exotic cats. They can never be free. They should never be born for life in cages.

Do Pumpkins Feel Pain? – October 2012 – Halloween Pumpkin Massacre at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa FL. Watch our tigers, lions, leopards and other big cats play with and destroy their annual Halloween treat! Every year we hand out over 100 pumpkins and gourds to the cats at the sanctuary and they just love to play with them and of course “kill” them, it’s great enrichment for the cats and the volunteers!
