Although Keisha loved her vacation, she is very happy to be back home.

Big Cat Updates

Many for you are asking how Armani is doing.  She is doing well.  She misses her sister but she is getting a lot of extra attention and treats.  Keepers are watching her closely and have prepared extra enrichment for her so they can distract her when she seems to be looking for her sister.

Keeper Jennifer Ruszczyk’s Coordinator Report for Sunday, October 1, 2017

Good day today. We did not have many volunteers but we did not have many tours either.

The interns and volunteers worked as a great team.

We are worming tomorrow so the diet prep was different.

Micky and Babycakes both have fans now. We turn on in the morning and off in the evening.

 Upcoming Big Cat Dentals

October 7th and 8th the following 6 big cats are tentatively scheduled to see the dentist team:  Zabu, Seth, Gabrielle, Andy, Priya, & Sassy

While each cat is out of the cages a well organized large team of volunteers will go in and work like crazy doing a deep cleaning and of each cat’s set of cages.

THOUGHT:  Go in ahead of time and set a bookmark in your browser for the link http://bigcatrescue.org/vet so you will be ready to watch.

Carole’s Corner

Howie and I just got back from the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. We made a lot of great new contacts to help us get more educational films out there on the plight of captive big cats, including some exciting stuff we hope to partner on in virtual reality.

A little bit of lighthearted fun with Howie and Carole Baskin during their day in Yellowstone National Park after attending the 2017 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and speaking at the #CatSummit.

 Big Shout Out

I received a note from Operations Manager / Keeper Kathryn this morning: “Could you send out a big thank you to our supporters. I put a bunch of stuff on the wishlist to organize our cleaning equipment and they came through big time. This is a huge improvement.”

 SAVE Award

Scratch’s Award for Volunteer Excellence, the SAVE Award

For outstanding volunteer service, the September SAVE Award goes to MC Streator! MC has recently taken on the task of keeping the larger areas of the sanctuary mowed and weed eated. In addition MC has been a huge help with leading work group projects on the weekends. Thank you MC for your dedication and extreme work ethic!

A donation of $1000 has been made in your honor to Big Life Foundation to save Cheetahs, Leopards, and Lions. (Howie and Carole met people from Big Life and it’s awesome!)

More about the project: The raising of livestock in Maasailand is a vital activity for the community’s subsistence. Predators are under constant threat from livestock owners who view them as a danger and kill them in retribution for livestock losses. Retaliatory killing is the major threat to Africa’s lion population today – the population is currently suffering a precipitous decline in numbers. Recent estimates show that, 20 years ago there were 200,000 lions in Africa and today there are less than 25,000 lions, with no more than 2,000 of these individuals residing in Kenya.

In 2003, in response to an imminent – and virtually certain – threat of local lion extinction, Maasailand Preservation Trust (MPT), in close collaboration with the local community, conceived a first-of-its-kind predator compensation Fund (PCF). The intention was to better balance the costs and benefits of living with wildlife and thereby replace conflict and retaliation with tolerance and cohabitation.

This novel conservation strategy remains one of the most far-reaching and effective projects yet conceived by MPT, the first project of its kind implemented in Maasailand.

One of many key aspects of the Predator Compensation Fund (PCF) is that it acts as an umbrella of protection – not only preventing lion extinction but also providing coverage for other persecuted species, such as hyena, cheetah, leopard, wild dog and jackal.

Since inception, lion killing has virtually stopped on Mbirikani Group Ranch within a Maasai community of 10,000 individuals. Only 6 lions were killed by livestock owners on Mbirikani Group Ranch during the first nine years of the project, while, during that same period, more than 200 lions were killed on the neighbouring group ranches where the PCF programme did not exist (at that time). The same Mbirikani Group Ranch community that now protects lions killed 22 in just 18 months prior to introduction of this innovative project. A key factor to PCF’s success is the requirement that the entire community must support the objectives of the programme or compensation will cease for everyone. https://biglife.org/predator-compensation

 STARS Award

Stars Prize: Each month volunteers who dedicate 25% over their minimum hourly requirements are put into a pool from which one partner and one keeper is randomly selected to win a prize. The prize for this year will be a paw painting from one of the cats. We will be making all of these paw paintings in big batches. So while you will not get to choose the cat who paints your paw painting, you will get to choose from the collection of completed paintings.

Keeper – Lauren Grant
Partner – Megan Myers

 Volunteer Hours

August = 3,491 volunteer hours contributed by 99 volunteers. That means YOU collectively put in the same hours as more than 21 full time paid staff would have during that same time.

August = 1,637 intern hours contributed 7 interns. That means YOU collectively put in the same hours as more than 10 full time paid staff would have during that same time.

If you look to any other animal sheltering type group you will find that they usually have dozens of paid staff if they have our level of income. Thanks to you we only have to pay about 15 staff members because YOU are doing all of the cat care and most of the guest relations. That means more of the money earned and donated can go to the cats and to ending the abuses that cause so many big cats to be discarded.

 Honey’s Gift Shop Update

Hi Partners,

We painted many of the new displays for the new gift shop over the weekend. Please dry these off from the rain and put them into the new gift shop.

You will notice the tarp in the gift shop hanging from the ceiling. This is where Victor is working on the hallway between the buildings. We dusted from the demo he did this week, but it may need to be dusted again. This should be finished up this week.

Please put the white bricks back out in front of the gift shop around the garden. These are in the storage shed in the parking lot.

Please restock the tees. The back stock of tees is still in the storage shed.

We should be getting some more of the chocolate soon. Please count them and leave me a list in my mailbox.

There will be a coke delivery on Tuesday.

I have ordered six boxes of ponchos. They will come in two sets of three boxes. One set should be put aside in the shed for the walkabout. The other set of three boxes are for regular use in the gift shop.

We have been staging where items will go in the new gift shop. Feel free to go inside and look around and see what you think. Nothing is set in stone so if you have ideas let me know.

We are still doing gift shop projects on Thursday’s to get everything ready to open the new gift shop. These are projects that will go towards the rewards program so if you can come in to help out please sign up.

Hopefully, we will have a open date for the new gift shop. Once that is set we will. Reds lots of help that Thursday to get everything moved over into the new space.

Regina has been coming in to help with thank yous. Please make sure she is eating and hydrated.

I think that’s everything. Thanks for all of your help.

Honey

QUESTION For Viewers:

IF YOU were going to do a Facebook Fundraiser for the cats for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or your birthday, what kind of suggestions could YOU GIVE US as to how we could better support your efforts?  What kind of things could we do to help you with your efforts to help the cats?

  • Facebook cover photos themed for the holiday or event?
  • Photos for your social media pages you could use to promote your fundraiser?
  • Something you could give away to your friends who donate to your fundraiser?  Downloadable items like photos, books, screensavers etc?

We want to help support your efforts and are very interested in your thoughts on this.
