BEST NEWS FOR CAPTIVE BIG CATS!

Big Cat Act

The Big Cat Public Safety Act has just been introduced in the Senate (S.2561)! This is the companion bill for the House of Representatives bill (H.R.1380), which is poised to next have a vote on the floor of the full House.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today introduced this crucial federal bill to prohibit the private ownership of big cats like lions and tigers by unlicensed individuals and make it illegal for exhibitors to allow direct contact between the public and cubs (cub petting ops).

Now we need YOU to ask the two U.S. Senators from your state to cosponsor the bill! Learn more and speak up for captive big cats in America at BigCatAct.com

Initial cosponsors of S.2561 are U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Cory Booker (D-NJ).

Coordinator Report – Lauren Buckingham

Great day today! Thank you to everyone that came in to help.

MC and Abbey did food prep before lunch, after cleaning.

Bridget came in early and did AM supplements.

In the afternoon the interns and I took on the task of taking down the bamboo in Dutchess’ enclosure…she made quite the mess! We also took advantage of being in there and weed-eated and mowed. She was given back access to her full enclosure.

Simba was a little off this morning but seemed like his normal self this afternoon.

That’s it from me!

Kristine’s Bobcat Rehab Overnight Kitten Report

FLINT – Precious Flint was SO adorable this afternoon! Jamie and Victor came and gave him a little pumpkin and he played and played with it, he loved it! They opened up the first middle section for him and he was having so much fun with his pumpkin that he didn’t pay attention that the door was open, lol. (I wanted to keep watching him every second because he was so cute, so I missed getting photos of him playing and going into the middle section.)

He played for a while and then he finally noticed the door was open and in he went. He slowly investigated the entire area, smelling everything. Then he would come into the front section and then go back into the new section to investigate more. He wandered around back there for a while and then he came back up front and curled up on the platform for a little nap.

When he woke up he wandered around a bit and then went into the new area. I saw him back there zooming all around the section, having so much fun! He stayed back there a lot investigating and playing. He did come in his front sections too and play with his pumpkin and stuffie.

After he had worn himself out he came back into the right front section and napped on the platform again. Later in the night, he woke up and wandered around then he went into the middle section. He saw Malachite and Malachite saw him and they both paced back and forth together in their enclosures. On Malachite’s back cam, I could see Flint’s eyes going back and forth as he was pacing, lol. So cute!

They did that for quite a while and then Malachite disappeared. Flint stayed back there in the middle section for a while, I couldn’t see him the whole time, but sometimes I would see him wandering around, having fun.

Later he came back into the front right side and got on top of the platform to lounge for a bit, before going back into the middle section. After a while, he came back into the front right section and got on the platform to lounge and watch everything around him. As I write this, he is stalking a squirrel that is on the grass in between his and Malachite’s enclosures. So adorable! He’s just too precious!!!

MALACHITE, ASH and CINDER – Ash and Cinder spent the afternoon and late afternoon, mostly in the very back section. They lounged and bathed on top of the tall platform, before cuddling up for a nice nap.

Later they woke up and Cinder got down on the shelf and Ash on the lower level of the platform. They sat there and looked around a bit then Ash jumped up on the shelf with Cinder and lounged, while Cinder played with a branch sticking up from the bush. They were so cute!!!

They lounged up there for a bit and then they got down and were off to play among the grass, bushes, and trees. Then they went into the middle section to play and check things out for a while. A little later, they came back to the tall platform and got on top to lounge, bathe and then they cuddled up together to take another nap. Ash bathed Cinder for a bit before he napped, it was so precious.

A while later, they woke up and were off to play again. They love to play in the middle part where all of the bushes, trees, and long grass are, but they do play in the short grass too.

After dark, they went to the front section to wander around and check things out. They sat and watched over towards Malachite’s and/or Flint’s cage for a bit, too. Then they disappeared into the middle section and after a while, they were back up on the tall platform, all cuddled up together peacefully napping.

Later they woke up and played a bit back there, then they went to the front section to wander around and they sat on the Coolaroo and watched for Malachite. Cinder paced the fence for a bit and then they made their way into the middle section and I didn’t see them for quite a while.

Not too long before it got light, they made their way back up front. They wandered around and played for a bit on the swinging shelf, then they zoomed around chasing each other. They are so cute! As I write this, they are lounging and bathing on the tall platform in the very back section. They are precious!!! 🙂

***I saw sweet Malachite overnight!!! 😀 He was pacing the fence while Flint paced his fence at the same time. They were so cute, following each other back and forth in their enclosures. He was up there for quite a while pacing and sometimes wandering around, then he eventually disappeared into another part of his enclosure. I even got a couple of photos of him I’ve included. He is precious!!!
