“The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity.
The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”
Lynda Licht – Sunday Funday never disappoints.
We had a few of our regulars off, so we were a lean, hard-working bunch. Unfortunately, this didn’t allow anyone to get sign-offs for tours or feeding (good thing so many got done yesterday).
Abbey Rivett, Sarah Copel, Jennifer Ruszczyk Amanda Fenick and I covered the regular feeding routes, while Dylan Lavigne did the feeding tour with new partner trainee Elissa Pally as a backup. All the cats ate well. Before the feeding tour, Dylan helped me with Ginger serval in the hospital.
While waiting for feeding to be done, Mai and DeDe went to the party hour to get all the trash and recycling from last night’s volunteer appreciation party. Nicole helped washing all the dishes and putting containers away. After meds and feeding, Jennifer Ruszczyk led the keeper tour with new intern Melody Moore as backup. Jen also handed out the leftover enrichment to some of the cats that didn’t get any on the tour.
Sarah Copel cleaned two big cat sections while Dylan and I did the third. Jen double-checked Sarah’s sections to end her day. Deidra Ritchie, Mai Richardson, Amanda Fenick, and Nicole Weaver handled all the small cats and cougars. All the cleaners made a lot of piles of fallen branches/limbs after the last two days of storms – we know that someone will pick them up tomorrow.
We had a large workgroup from USF come in and they were supervised by Abbey and Cassidy Helber. They cleaned two enclosures on “tiger island”, getting them ready for Simba, Max, and Kimba. We all can’t wait for those tiger boys to get here.
Amanda Fenick jumped right into food prep after she was done the cleaning. She was joined by Dylan and Sarah at the end of the day. Sarah took care of the cat’s that need daily cicles for hydration while I did PM supplements.
The Holleys came in to do repairs/renovations on platforms in three cat enclosures. TomTom bobcat got side panel and ramp side guards so this little old lady stays safe when up on her platform. Sundari leopard’s ramp to the top of her platform was moved down a level – sorry Sunny, that ramp was just a bit too high and too steep for you these days. Gilligan lynx’s ramp and low platform were replaced as the boards had started to rot.
Becky Gagliardo came in to do PM meds. She helped a bit with food prep and then took Abbey Rivett out for a meds signoff.
I just read Karma’s report on the gift shop team. Thanks so much to all of you for coming in – we couldn’t have covered the work on the keeper side without you.
Thanks again all,
Karma Hurworth – We had a steady, but smooth day in the gift shop thanks to some great help today!
Lisa, Christine, Amanda & Cassidy were our guides today, along with Abdullah getting another tour guide sign off. He also got his small cat cleaning class and was a huge help with end of day chores!
Marilyn, Regina, Melody, Adrian, and Elissa took care of all the backing up. Elissa also got her Animal Observation class and helped with closing chores.
Edith kept the tours running as usual and also cleaned all the gift shop bathrooms this morning!
Thank you, everyone,

Kristine’s Bobcat Rehab Overnight Report
MALACHITE, ASH and CINDER – In the afternoon, Ash and Cinder’s gates were opened so they were back together again and they were so cute! Cinder was napping on the tall platform in the back section and Ash was awake, so he saw that the gate was open and he went looking for Cinder.
After a bit, his head popped up above the platform where Cinder was sleeping and she woke up, turned around and they smelled each other, then Ash jumped down to investigate the back section and Cinder followed him. They wandered around together side by side checking everything out and they would lovingly rub against each other as they walked. It was SO cute!
They walked through all the sections a few times checking things out, then they saw Malachite in his enclosure and ran back and forth along the fencing watching him. After a while, they made their way to the back section and ran around back there along the fence closest to Malachite following him as he paced his side.
Then they went into the middle section for a while, I saw them back there running around playing, lol. After dark, they went into the back section and got up on top of the tall platform to curl up together and take a nice nap.
Later they woke up and they must have heard something because they jumped down real fast and they were back there in the dark somewhere for a little while. Then pretty soon they jumped back up on the tall platform to curl up together again and take another nap.
A little while later Cinder woke up and headed to the front section to wander around, while Ash stayed on the platform and napped a while longer. Then a short time later, Ash woke up and went to find Cinder, then they roamed around and checked things out for a while. Ash lounged by the tree next to the den in the front left side and bathed for a bit, while Cinder paced the fence. After a bit, they disappeared into the middle section. As I write this, they are back up front just wandering around together. They are so precious!!! 🙂
***I saw sweet Malachite in the late afternoon! He was in his first section looking around, then he got up on top of the feeding station crate and found his dinner, picked it up and ran off out of sight. I didn’t see him anymore overnight. He’s so precious!!! 🙂
I wish everyone a blessed day!
Warm wishes, Kristine Metzner
