Officials identify Keri tiger killing spot

3 Jun 2009, 0504 hrs IST, Paul Fernandes, TNN

PANAJI: In another significant development after Saturday’s breakthrough when remains of the poached tiger’s carcass were found in a cashew plantation at Keri, forest department officials identified the location where the tiger was slain and found some more of the big cat’s charred remains barely 100 metres from the site.

“We are now confident of solving the entire case and catching the accused with the evidence collected at the site and interrogation of suspects and others. The bits and pieces of the case are falling into place,” a forest department official said.

Chief conservator of forests Shashi Kumar was not available for comment, but deputy conservator of forest G Trinadh Kumar said investigations had reached a crucial stage. “Every step of the investigation is important now and we have to keep the information confidential,” he said.

The progress in the case vindicates the TOI report of April 13, 2009 on a tiger being poached. Keri villagers had told TOI that the animal had been roaming around human settlements, which had unnerved residents enough for someone to lay a trap.
