CLEVELAND, OH

An autopsy report indicates a caretaker mauled by a captive bear near Cleveland had at least 200 puncture wounds, hundreds more bruises and cuts, and two fractured ribs.

The bear attacked 24-year-old Brent Kandra after he opened its cage for a feeding Aug. 19 at the home of a man who kept wolves, tigers and bears on property southwest of Cleveland.

The Cuyahoga (keye-uh-HOH’-guh) County coroner determined Kandra’s death was a workplace accident.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says the severity of the injuries described in the report raises questions about how quickly the animal keeper intervened during the attack. PETA wants a prosecutor to pursue reckless homicide charges against the owner, Sam Mazzola.

PETA previously targeted the owner because he staged wrestling matches between bears and humans.
