Pet-Friendly Shelter Drill

Hillsborough County Animal Services along with local preparedness group
C.H.A.A.R.T. will hold a practice drill and volunteer recruitment on
Saturday, June 7 from 11:00 a.m. to  1:00. in Tampa.  The activity will
be held at Sickles High School in Tampa's Citrus Park neighborhood.
Participants are asked to bring their own bottled water and dress
casually for the exercise.    Formal animal handling experience is
preferable but not required, and a variety of volunteer skills may be
utilized during an actual disaster.

C.H.A.A.R.T. stands for Community of Hillsborough Animal & Agricultural
Response Team and is comprised of members from both government and
private sectors.  Its mission is to plan for the protection of domestic
pet and commercial interests in the event of a hurricane or other
disaster.    Last June, Hillsborough County Animal Services' director
Bill Armstrong was recognized by the State's Commissioner of Agriculture
for his work post-Hurricane Katrina and the formation of the
C.H.A.A.R.T. organization.

Currently, there are two approved pet-friendly shelters in Hillsborough
County:  Burnett Middle School in Seffner (1010 N. Kingsway Road), and
Sickles High School in Tampa (7950 Gunn Highway, Tampa).    Only pets of
residents who are also taking shelter will be accepted, and proof of
current rabies vaccination will be required.   Reservations will not be
taken, and sheltering will be provided on a first-come/first-served
basis.    The facilities will only accept dogs, cats, and pocket-pets
(no exotics).   Public shelters should be considered as a last resort
only.

For more information or to RSVP for the pet-shelter drill, please call
Hillsborough County Animal Services at 744-5660 or log onto
www.hillsboroughcounty.org and/or www.chaart.org  .
