PETA praises Price Chopper

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, announced Thursday that it is giving the president of Price Chopper supermarkets an award for pulling its sponsorship of a lion and tiger act at the Champlain Valley Fair.
Neil Golub, Price Chopper's president, will receive a Compassionate Action Award from PETA, the organization said.
"By refusing to sponsor the Nerger Lion and Tiger Show, Price Chopper is sending fair officials and attendees a strong message that big cats shouldn't be subjected to unnatural environments, noisy crowds, and cruel training methods," PETA official Debbie Leahy said in a statement.
The supermarket chain withdrew its sponsorship of the act last week, claiming it was misled by fair officials about the nature of the show and objecting to the use of caged animals for entertainment purposes.
A fair spokesman has disputed Price Chopper's claim, saying it told supermarket executives that act involved an "educational big cat show." The act, involving 12 tigers and a lion, is going on as scheduled three times a day at the fair.
The animals used in the show belong to Hawthorn Corp., an Illinois company that supplies performing animals to circus and fair acts. Hawthorn has been cited several times by the federal Agriculture Department for its caging, care and training of animals.
