Ramesh reviews tiger conservation efforts

Thursday, June 4, 2009

New Delhi, June 4 (PTI) Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Thursday reviewed efforts being undertaken for conservation of tigers in the country.

The minister met Rajesh Gopal, member secretary of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) along with other officials and sought details on the measures being taken to protect the royal predators whose count has declined to 1,411 as per latest official estimate.

Officials at NTCA told PTI that the minister was fully prepared about the subject as well as related problems.

“He was well-prepared and had thorough understanding of the subject as he discussed burning issues relating to the tiger conservation such as staff shortage, relocation and security plans,” the officials added.

Mr. Ramesh, who took charge of the ministry last week is scheduled to visit a few tiger reserves in the country soon.
