ELYRIA — Sam Mazzola pleaded no contest Tuesday in Elyria Municipal Court to a misdemeanor charge that he failed to maintain proper records for some of the animals he owns and keeps at his Columbia Township compound.

Mazzola, who remains under investigation for the fatal mauling of Brent Kandra by one of his bears last year, was fined $250 and sentenced to 60 days in jail, although the jail time was suspended on condition of two years good behavior.

Elyria Municipal Court Judge Gary Bennett also ordered Mazzola to bring his books into compliance with state law within six months. Mazzola said an official from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife came to his compound Tuesday evening and helped him properly account for the animals he owns.
