Big Cat Updates

Flint has passed his outside tests and has moved outside meaning his inside webcam has been unplugged since he is no longer in there.  He is doing well, growing and getting stronger every day. The cage he is in has been modified to prohibit climbing. Keepers will be looking him over well every day to make sure he is not injuring himself.

Ginger and Flint follow up exams from 9/16/2019

Ginger’s fracture is healing, but there was some fluid near her ankle joint that was of concern. A sample of the fluid was sent to the lab to test for infection. If it comes back negative she can go back outside! Otherwise, she may need a little more time hearing in the Recovery Hospital.

Flint’s follow up exam went very well. He has not sustained any more damage to his bones and he has been cleared to move outside to the small sections of the rehab enclosure.

Pawsome news for captive big cats in America!!

Just hours ago the Natural Resources Committee of the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. voted and passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act (HR 1380) out of committee. The next step is for House leadership to schedule a vote on the bill for the entire House floor!! We are hopeful the vote will take place before the end of the year.

It’s now URGENT that the bill have as many co-sponsors as possible! We only have until the Committee issues its report (about one week) to add more co-sponsors. If your House Rep has not yet co-sponsored, please call and urge him/her to sign on! Suggested Wording: “The House Natural Resources Committee has voted and passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act HR 1380 out of committee. Please sign on now as a co-sponsor to help get this crucial bill for captive big cats to the House floor for a vote. Thank you!”

Locate your House Rep and take action at BigCatAct.com

THANK YOU to everyone who has called, emailed and written letters to their Representatives urging them to support the Big Cat Public Safety Act! And to those who have lobbied Capitol Hill on behalf of our bill, and those who have shared our posts and links and other information about the importance of the bill with their family and friends and urged them to take action. Today we are one big step closer to making this bill a federal law to end the private ownership of big cats and ban cub petting!

Mems and Quote of the Day - “You’re not going to change one whisper about yesterday, but tomorrow is an entirely different story”

Coordinator Report – Lauren Grant

Beautiful day today!

Thank you to Marie, Cindy, Mark, & Candy for coming to feed and clean. During cleaning Fred and Dylan worked on cleaning up Rehab Cage 3. After lunch, Taylor and Cassidy joined to help finish it up. It looks great! Candy worked on the outside on Manny Jaguar’s enclosure, cutting the palmettos between the cages and raking. It looks great too!

Abbey and redshirt Diane did food prep. Thanks to Cindy and Marie for handing out cicles, and letting Diane get some fun cat time. Afton, Mark, and I handed out the new toys to the new cats. Mouser thought it was great ?.

Thanks again for a great day, everyone!

Brittany 9/18/2019: I had an absolute magic moment with Philmo today!! He is definitely the shyest of the four new cats but he has taken a liking to his platform and watching his neighbors when no one is around ? He bolts away every time he hears a golf cart but then slowly comes back… I have faith that he will get used to all the new sights, smells and sounds soon ?❤️

Kristine’s Bobcat Rehab Overnight Report

ASH and CINDER –
Ash and Cinder wandered around in the front section during the afternoon. They wandered around the left side checking things out and did the same in the front right side. They looked for Malachite for a bit and got a drink of water, then they went and got up on top of the den and sat for a short time.

Then some keepers came to work in the Rehab area and to get Flint’s enclosure ready for his first night outside, so Ash and Cinder took off and hid for quite a while. Later in the late afternoon, after the keepers were gone, they came back up front to check things out. They wandered around and looked out toward Malachite’s cage and they sat on the Coolaroo for a bit.

After a while, they disappeared into the middle section for a while. Right before it got dark, they were wandering around the front and middle sections back and forth, just checking things out. I think they must have heard Flint being chatty because they stared his way and their ears were very attentive. They both sat there and watched that way for a little while, then went back to roaming around.

After a while, they made their way to the middle section to nap in their secret spot. Later overnight they were in the very back section playing in the grass. They kept looking up and saw something up on top of the enclosure and climbed up to try to get it. I’m not sure if they thought they knocked it down or what, but they were digging in the grass below where they had climbed. They played back there for a while, running and wrestling. They had so much fun!

After a while, they made their way up to the front section to wander around and pace the fence. A little later, they saw something just on the other side of the fence and went crazy trying to get to it. They were even digging, lol. They paced back and forth very fast while watching it, then whatever it was left and they went back to just wandering around and then they went into the middle section.

They came back up to the front, played on the hanging shelf and zoomed around chasing each other. As I write this, they are wandering around the front section and pacing the fence. They are so adorable! 🙂

***I don’t have reports for Flint or Malachite, because Flint had his first night outside last night and he didn’t have a camera. I’m sure he enjoyed himself immensely! 🙂 Malachite also doesn’t have any cameras right now.
