Storm damage closes zoo

By Carl Kanefsky

The Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington is closed after suffering major damage during Sunday’s storms.

WDEL’s Carl Kanefsky has the story. Video Here

Animals may bite, but not as hard as Mother Nature’s force as she toppled trees that pulled down power lines…even forcing a Siberian Tiger out of it’s cage and into a secure holding area.

Signs at the entrance let visitor’s know the zoo is closed, while crews on the other side of the gates work to clear debris and restore electricity.

Zoo Director Nancy Falasco says all the animals are safe, but a lot of clean up is needed.

A security guard notified zoo officials that power had gone out and tress had fallen throughout the zoo.

Falasco says the entire zookeeper force was called in as part of an emergency protocol…a system developed a few years ago.

Falasco hopes the zoo can reopen on Wednesday.
