A 16-year-old Amur tiger died Tuesday at the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls.
The feline had just been taken to the CHC Foundation Animal Health Care Center for a routine physical and had passed with flying colors.
But when it had returned to the zoo, the cat stopped breathing and efforts to revive the animal did not work. A second tiger who also received a physical Tuesday returned to the zoo without incident.
The loss of the tiger hit zoo workers hard; they have worked with the cat for more than 13 years and had developed a relationship with the cat. The tiger was born in Houston, Texas in 1994 and had been moved to Idaho Falls on February 28th back in 1997.
A necropsy which is the animal version of an autopsy failed to reveal why the tiger died. Blood tests have been sent to a lab for analysis.
