Tiger deaths at city zoo

Express News Service

T’PURAM: At a time when controversies after controversies on tiger population are raging across the country, the State has lost three tiger cubs born in captivity. The dead cubs were among the four born to Karthika, the female tiger at the Thiruvananthapuram zoo, on February 21.

The first cub died soon after birth. While the other three cubs were alive and healthy till Friday morning, two were found dead inside the cage on Saturday morning.

The zoo veterinarian Jayakumar is away attending an international conference in Delhi. The charge had been given to the former zoo doctor, C.J. Chandra.

This was Karthika’s second delivery. “Even her first delivery was a failure with the cubs dying soon after delivery,” said Museums and Zoos director Elcy George. Of the four cubs born on Thursday, only one male cub is alive now.
