Mohali:
Mahendra Chaudhary Chhatbir Zoological park lost a female Royal Bengal tiger ‘Meenu’ late on Saturday. The 19-year-old tigress died of old age, said zoo authorities. The average lifespan of a tiger in captivity is 18 to 20 years.
The postmortem conducted by a panel of three veterinary doctors revealed that the tigress died of C-V collapse led by Myocardiac infarction. The animal was cremated as per guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), in presence of a team headed by the deputy director, said Zoo Field Director Churchill Kumar.
The Kumar told Newsline that the death of the animal was reported by the night zookeeper early in the morning. It was later confirmed by the senior veterinary officer of the zoo.
With the demise of ‘Meenu’, a total of 10 tigers, including six females and four males are left at the Chhatbir Zoo.
