Tiger kills female rival in zoo

Aschersleben, Germany – A male tiger killed a female rival after a handler opened the wrong door of her cage in a German zoo, officials said Wednesday.

The white Siberian tiger Tanja strolled into the enclosure usually reserved for two Bengali tigers at the zoo in the eastern state of Aschersleben.

She was immediately pounced on by Karim, a two-year-old male tiger, who bit her in the throat and killed her.

“We are in a state of shock,” zoo director Dietmar Reisky said a day after the incident. “We are at a loss to explain the attack. Tigers are not usually so aggressive.”
