Tigers’ protection ignored in MP

Tigers’ protection ignored in MP

Posted On Monday, September 07, 2009

Madhya Pradesh is the state that is known as tiger state where the ignoring of their protection is condemnable. Recently the news came to light that Panna Tiger Reserve has lost its all the tigers like Sariska Tiger Reserve of Rajasthan. But after some days it came to light that cubs have been seen there.

It indicates the presence of tigers. It is mandatory under Wild Life Protection Act for the states that having tigers that they should make Tiger protection schemes and a high level committee should be constituted under the chairmanship of the state with a view to make buffer zone where the tigers could be kept within the sanctuary. Such steps have not been taken in Madhya Pradesh yet.

Central government provides sufficient fund in this connection to the states-Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Assam etc. 95 tigers have been killed in the 17 tiger protection areas of the country. Whereas, the central government has provided more than Rs 150 crore to these states under project tiger scheme.

The same situation is in Rajasthan as buffer zone has not been prepared yet. Moreover, Assam has also not built any protection schemes for 350 tigers in its sanctuaries. There are only 1400 tigers in the entire country now. Fund provided by central government could not be used in more than 80 per cent tiger reserve areas.

Even after providing sufficient fund by the central government in this connection these states have showed irresponsible attitude. Now, it would be better that the state governments should not be provided fund for tiger reserve and should conduct the scheme itself.

The states have adopted criminal attitude towards the species which is scared to be disappeared. There is need to make amendment in the constitution and wild life protection should be taken in under central government.
