Tigress dead at Bandipur

MYSORE: A day after a tiger attacked a farmer in Heggadadevanakote taluk, a tigress was found dead inside the Bandipur National Park on Sunday.

It is suspected to have died in a fight with another animal. The fourth tiger death in the Bandipur national park in few weeks has rung warning bells for the forest officials even as PCCF (wildlife) B K Singh rushed to the spot.

The carcass of the tigress was found at Naisattahalla in N Begur range of Bandipur National Park by the forest officials on patrol duty. Though the officials are claiming that it could have died in a fight with another animal, Singh is reportedly unconvinced. What has raised doubts is that the big cat is some four years old and tigress is not known to fight with tigers in the habitat. The autopsy will be conducted on Monday. Even poaching is not ruled out as in May, the forest officials had seized tiger skin near the Bandipur national park.

Just 24 hours ago, the death of another six-year-old tigress was reported at Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in Chikmagalur. The tigress was shifted from Nagarhole to Bhadra recently.

Since January, five big cats have been reported dead at tiger reserves of Nagarhole and Bandipur. Earlier, tiger deaths were reported at Moleyur, Kalkere, Gundre, N Begur and Antarasanthe in Nagarhole.
