Movie Night Under the Stars Thinking we would have too many volunteers to seat inside last night we set up the benches and movie equipment outside, only to decide at the last minute that it just wasn't going to be dark enough. So we broke down the screenand equipment and jammed as many rows of chairs as we could in the Party Pavilion to accomodate what we had thought and hoped would be our usual contingent of 70 or so volunteers. We had a guest speaker to do her first comedy routine in front of an audience. Samantha Churchill is the artist who has created the beautiful wire sculptures of cats that we have had at our Fur Ball and is a very funny person, one on one, so we had asked her if she might maker her debut in front of our warm crowd. Can you imagine how scary it would be to get up in front of a crowd and try to do your first stand up routine? As expected though, our volunteers were wonderful and gave her a big round of applause! Volunteers brought so many yummy dishes that we didn't even have enough room left over for chips and popcorn for the movie we watched! The movie, America's Most Dangerous Pets, which is primarily about the person weare suing in federal court and a few of his cronies, really gave everyone a peek behind the gates into what we consider to be hell holes where big cats and primates are bred to be used as "photo babies" and then relegated to small, overcrowded cages that ranged from mud pits, to concrete floors to cats who spend their whole lives walking on rocks. The people in the video are funny in that they are totally oblivious to the way they come across and seem to be a pretty illiterate group to boot, but Samantha pointed out that it is so sad that animals are kept this way that she had a hard time finding anything funny to say. Instead she read a beautiful poem, written about a captive leopard, back from the 1800's and surmised that things haven't changed much for the animals. But with your help we will change it! Everything you do at the sanctuary and out on presentations to the community, both formally and in howyou educate people one on one, is changing the way people are thinking about and treating wild animals. It was an inspirational evening for those of us who were there and if you weren't, I hope you are involved enough with us to see how our work together is changing things for the better for captive animals.
