If you think this was boring to watch, it was mind numbing to record.  Instead of spending quality time observing the daily lives of a myriad of exotic cats, my days are usually spent doing paperwork, renewing licenses, creating training classes and videos, dealing with politics, learning software and personnel issues.

King Amendment Means More Cruelty for Animals

The current Congressional recess is the ideal time to track down your elected officials in your home district and publicly urge them to do everything they can to eliminate the disastrous “King Amendment” from the U.S. Farm Bill — language that outrageously would prevent states from setting their own animal welfare and food safety standards!

It is hard to overstate the devastating potential of Rep. Steve King’s (R-IA) Farm Bill language. The King Amendment essentially forbids states from applying their own safety and welfare regulations to any “agricultural products” from out of state — including animals raised for food, eggs, and milk and even puppies and kittens sold to pet stores. It would nullify many of the hard-fought victories won by animal advocates to protect calves, hens, pregnant sows, and other animals — including California’s foie gras ban, state-level gestation crate bans, as well as state laws cracking down on puppy mills and banning horsemeat and even dog meat sales! All could be eliminated by the current U.S. Farm Bill containing the King Amendment.

That is why we need your voice — will you speak up for animals by participating in the democratic process?

Find your U.S. Senators, then click on their names to be taken to their personal websites. That site should list all of the upcoming Town Hall meetings they are holding back home during this current recess. Then identify your U.S. Representative by entering your zip code in the top right corner and doing the same. If the meetings are not listed on your elected officials’ sites, then call their offices to ask when and where they will be meeting with constituents.

At these Town Hall meetings you simply need to publicly ask the following question:

“Can I have your pledge that you will do everything you can to make sure the King Amendment is removed from the Farm Bill when Congress returns in September?”

If you attend a Town Hall meeting, leave a comment on our website and let us know how it went!

Can’t make it to a meeting? Help us multiply our impact by sharing this action on social media!

For the animals,

Stephen Wells
