SILIGURI (West Bengal): Two cheetahs were found dead in the Dooars forest area of West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, officials said.
The carcass of an adult male cheetah was found on the railway track between the Banarhat and Binnagury stations of the North East Frontier Railway.
Tapas Kumar Das, divisional forest officer (wildlife), Jalpaiguri, said the animal was run over by a train.
However, Parthasarahti Mondal, additional divisional railway manager at Alipurduar, said a preliminary inquiry revealed the cheetah had not died due to a collision with a train.
He said the carcass was found by a railway patrolling party. Train movement was disrupted for some time and a few goods trains were cancelled.
The other Cheetah died at the South Khaerbari rehabilitation centre in the Dooars area.
No details, including the cause of death, were immediately available.
