Wandering tiger heading towards Lucknow?

LUCKNOW: This aberrant tiger seems to be out to secure a one-to-one with `who’s who’ of the forest department. Walking all his way from Pilibhit to Sidhauli, the tiger might be in Lucknow soon, if not trapped by the department, to voice the agony of his existence within the forests, which are devoid of prey and trespassed by humans.

The tiger has been on the prowl in and around Pilibhit forests for almost a month. The forest officials from the respective divisions confirmed his presence at some or the other point of time. It had put the official staff on toes after the tiger killed some village cattle in Mohammadi range of South Kheri forest division.

It was only after a half-eaten body of a bull was found lying in Kutubpur village under Pasgawan development block of the range two weeks back, that staff came into momentum to trap it. But the two-day operation ended in vain after the beast shifted places.

The tiger has almost covered a distance of 150 kilometres from Mohammadi range to Sidhauli in two weeks time. Mostly, big cats cover an aerial distance of approximately 30 kilometres in one go.

Considering this, the distance of 60 kilometres that the beast is away from Lucknow might be covered by it shortly if the department does not trap it this time. There have also been reports from the villages of Sidhauli that the tiger has killed the stray cattle.

This certainly exposes the tiger to a danger of inviting backlash from humans. The department needs to act for the safety of all. The Sitapur officials confirmed the presence of big cat in the area. However, one contradiction that emerges here is that beast in Mohammadi was reportedly found to be a tigress but “this one is a tiger”, said RK Sachan, DFO, Sitapur.

The official said that pugmarks have been examined and animal has been found to be a male. The pugmarks have been sent to Dudhwa so that they could be matched with those found there. Sidhauli does not have forest patches but has large sugarcane fields and that is the only hiding place for the animal.

“The animal has not hurt anyone so far and has probably lost his way,” added the official. The efforts, he said, are being made to trap him. The latest reports have showed his presence in Mahmoodabad tehsil.
