The husband and wife team who started the Wild Animal Orphanage have

given notice. Carol and Ron Asvestas have taken themselves out at the

top of the food chain. The attorney representing the sanctuary says

the board of directors asked for and received notices from the couple

that they will vacate their jobs. It’s described as "a leave of

absence." And, the attorney says it will allow the rest of the

caretakers of some 500-animals the ability to re-organize and

invigorate the charity.

Carol was the director, and her husband, Ron, was the manager of the

place.

The orphanage maintains hundreds of animals, from monkeys to tigers:

animals that have been retired from the circus, or laboratories, or

abandoned.

Questions about treatment of the animals and the handling of the

donations got the Texas State Attorney General involved a couple of

years ago.

The attorney for the sanctuary says the leave of absence is expected

to last no more than 3 months.
