LUCKNOW: Monday brought a mix of joy and sadness for Lucknow zoo. While a tigress gave birth to four cubs, a newborn hog deer died.

The good news first. Four cubs were born to the tiger couple — Ipsita and Shishir. This was announced by zoo director Renu Singh at a press conference on Monday.

The arrival of cubs is all the more special because it is after a gap of almost a decade that tiger cubs have been born in Lucknow zoo. Ipsita and Shishir had been brought to the zoo from Nandankanan zoo about four years back.

Singh informed the cubs belong to the Royal Bengal breed. Of the four cubs, three are brown in colour while one is white. The white cub is a result of Ipsita having a mixed parental history — her father was a white tiger.

Singh said the cubs would remain under close observation, at least for 10 days. Public can see them only after a month.

Meanwhile, a dead baby hog deer was spotted by zoo authorities. The instance came to light after a group of scavenger birds was noticed in the deer enclosure. On close observation, the authorities found a carcass of a deer. Zoo officials, however, maintained that it was a newborn deer who could not survive for long.
