Poetry For and About Big Cats

 Circus Tiger

Cry and cry, without a voice,Work and work, without a choice.Crack of whip and clang of cage,Work and work, without a wage.Stolen, newborn, from their mothers,Lives are governed by the others.Terror of the whip and Master,Make mistake and whip goes faster.Punished if they don’t obey,Never granted their own way.Cower, loathe, and fear the whipEven if they only trip.Broken spirit, tired, hungry.Famished tiger, sad and angry.Life in tiny jail of darkness,Never shown a bit of kindness. All the food there is to eatIs tiny rotten bits of meat.Deemed emotionless they lieIn tiny cage until they die.© Rachael Weiss 2016

Thor the Bobcat

Although your rehab has been slow,We all just wanted you to know,When we gave you a second chance,Thor Houdini Fancypants,We loved you so, and crossed our paws,And hoped you’d live, Thor ThunderclawsYou took your chance, and more than that,You stole our hearts you stubborn cat,Today we set you free to runAcross the land beneath the sun,To be who you were born to be,A wild bobcat, fierce and free.© Rachael Weiss 2016

Teisha Tiger

Teisha the Tiger, so sweet and so strong,She lived a life that was hard and was long. All of the tigers locked in beat her up,Lying on concrete, she couldn’t stand up.Dinner was fatty leftovers of meat,And that was all that they gave her to eat. Then one day, Teisha and all of the restWere rescued by angels, and only the best.Teisha had never been treated so nice,Now she was living in near paradise.Without her strong will she’d never have livedTo see goodness and feel what it’s like to be loved. The rescuer angels loved Teisha and nursedHer back to her feet, though she wobbled at first,She learned how to run to the Keepers and chuff,And splash in her pool, she could not get enough.Teisha the tiger enjoyed her new lifeAnd never looked back on her previous strife. One day, she couldn’t stand up on her feet.Dragging was all she could do for a treat.Everyone wondered if there was no hope,But Teisha the strong-willed, to that thought said ‘nope’.She knew that the humans would do all they could. If she had to be put down she knew that they would.Although they feared giving up on her was nearTeisha would give up on nothing but fear. She stood up again, but her body just broke.Everyone knew that it wasn’t a joke.Though six months of freedom had been so much fun,Her lifetime of torture could not be undone.Teisha the tiger accepted her fate.No one could save her now, it was too late.Teisha the fighter, the fearless, the brave,Now lay forever with tears round her grave. The memory of Teisha will not soon grow oldAnd we will make sure that her story is told.© Rachael Weiss 2016

Swimming in the rain

I used to be a circus act,Beaten, mocked, abused and whacked. But I was rescued, that’s a fact. Now I’m swimming in the rain. But now I’m home, I’m here to stay,With my own lake to splash and play,And mini forest hide-away.I’m swimming in the rain. The power of the thunder crashAnd fearsome shock of lightning’s flashMake it fun to swim and splash.I’m swimming in the rain.© Rachael Weiss 2016

BROKEN PRIDE

I have seen the Serengeti through eyes of gold.I have been hunted for my mane, both young and old.Can you hear my roar, I have a name, I am the King of my domain.A forgotten breed, longing to be freed.I roam the land, where my ancestors took final stands.Paw prints of pride; I will take my last stride.I FIGHT for my kingdom, I FIGHT for our freedom.I continue to FIGHT, for what I believe in….Gina Schopmeyer  2015

Teacher

Eyes that dazzle and see into my soul to light a fire that does not burn,Individual in yourself yet part of the world,You’ve taught me to see my own stripes and the pattern I will leave for others to envy.I will walk the labyrinth you’ve left for me guided by your stripes which complement those I have earned. So strong you roar for meI show my gratitude by speaking for you soWe both can purr on the inside.by Elisha Cheeseman

Especially for the Ocelot

Lets hope the Feline walk the earth with majesty and grace

I like other furriers did put them in their place

We hunted and abused them

Great shame I feel today

For woman to adorn herself to keep the cold at bay

Lets hope this awful trade we knew

Will never come again

The mind to kill and skin a beast

For pure financial gain

Lets hope we?ve learned our lesson

To keep the human body warmAnd seek some other ways

On bitter winter days

But if bitterness the answer

No more can one man say

May the Lord have mercy on my soul

For the way I earned my payFormer Fur Trader- Ronnie

Hamlet's Cat's Soliloquy

To go outside, and there perchance to stayOr to remain within, that is the question:Whether 'tis better for a cat to sufferThe cuffs and buffets of inclement weatherThat Nature rains on those who roam abroad,Or take a nap upon a scrap of carpet,And so by dozing melt the solid hoursThat clog the clock's bright gears with sullen timeAnd stall the dinner bell. To sit, to stareOutdoors, and by a stare to seem to stateA wish to venture forth without delay,Then when the portal's opened up, to standAs if transfixed by doubt. To prowl; to sleep; To choose not knowing when we may once moreOur readmittance gain: aye, there's the hairball; For if a paw were shaped to turn a knob,Or work a lock or slip a window-catch,And going out and coming in were madeAs simple as the breaking of a bowl,What cat would bear the household's petty plagues,The cook's well-practiced kicks, the butler's broom,The infant's careless pokes, the tickled ears,The trampled tail, and all the daily shocksThat fur is heir to, when, of his own free will,He might his exodus or entrance makeWith a mere mitten? Who would spaniels fear,Or strays trespassing from a neighbor's yard,But that the dread of our unheeded criesAnd scratches at a barricaded doorNo claw can open up, dispels our nerveAnd makes us rather bear our humans' faultsThan run away to unguessed miseries? Thus caution doth make house cats of us all;And thus the bristling hair of resolutionIs softened up with the pale brush of thought,And since our choices hinge on weighty things,We pause upon the threshold of decision.-- Shakespaw

                              Trading Places

I am the one looking at you through metal fencingYou are the one, on the other side, that I am sensing.I have seen your kind many times before,Sometimes I see a few of you, sometimes more.My eyes follow you whether it is near or far away,My senses aware of you, whether it be night or day.My eyes can see you from between the trees and the brush,As you stalk me and I hear you telling others to hush. You hush but I can still hear and feel you near,And I look and I can smell and feel: you are here.My curiosity usually does get the best of me,When I get up to approach you, from underneath my tree.At times I will deceive you with my natural charm,My greeting to you will be friendly and warm. Some of you fear me, as you surely should,Thinking I might harm you if only I could? At times I will want to be where you are,At times I will want to walk away: To be far.My eyes are clear and yet they seem to deceive me,And I know that your world is different than the one that I see.For one brief moment I will be close to you and we touch,We will never know whether it means a little, or just how much.I will linger around you and my departure I'll postpone,But then you leave again, and I am still all alone.I will look back as I'm walking away,My instincts are urging me to roam and go astray.I look back at you, the one that is roaming free.I look ahead of me and walk away, and wish that it was me.By Volunteer, Brigitte IvoryGreat cat quotes:"There is no snooze button on a cat whowants breakfast." --Unknown"Thousands of years ago, cats wereworshipped as gods. Volunteers

Many will be shocked to find,When the day of judgment nears,That there is a special place in HeavenSet aside for volunteers.Furnished with big recliners,Satin couches and footstools,Where there are no committee chairmen,No yard sales or rest area coffee to serve,No library duty or bulletin assembly,There will be nothing to print and staple,Not one thing to fold and mail,Telephone lists will be outlawed. But a finger snap will bringCool drinks and gourmet dinnersAnd rare treats fit for a kingYou ask "Who will serve these privileged fewAnd work for all they're worth?"Why, all those who reaped the benefits,And not once volunteered on Earth.Author Unknown.  Submitted by Doug Edwards and Kelly DornThis is a poem done in the Hebrew format of taking the alphabet from A-Z and writing eight lines per letter. LIVING LOVE

If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember...

The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your young new friend. You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked numerous opinions of many vets, or done long research in finding a breeder.

Or, perhaps in a fleeting moment, you may have just chosen that silly looking mutt in a shelter - simply because something in its eyes reached your heart. But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your hall or front room - and when you feel it brush against you for the first time - it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.

The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later. It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth. You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy. And you will see sleep where you once saw activity. So you will begin to adjust your friend's diet - and you may add a pill or two to her food. And you may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness. And you will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day finally arrives.

And on this day, if your friend and God have not decided for you, you will be faced with making a decision of your own - on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit. But whichever way your friend eventually leaves you, you will feel as alone as a single star in the dark night.

If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. And if you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you.

But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joy-filled years, you may find that a soul - a bit smaller in size than your own - seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come. And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg - very very lightly. And looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay - you will remember those three significant days.

The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart. As time passes the ache will come and go as it has a life of its own. You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you. If you reject it, it will depress you. If you embrace it, it will deepen you. Either way, it will still be an ache.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when - along with the memory of your pet, and piercing through the heaviness in your heart - there will come a realization that belongs only to you. It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost. This realization takes the form of a Living Love - like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow - and be there for us to remember.

It is a love we have earned. It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go. And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live. It is a Love which is ours alone. And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets - it is a Love that we will always possess.

Lakota's Bleeding Hearts

The morning since you passed away

The night before that broke my heart

The Bleeding Heart bloomed full today

A birth from death we?re all a part

You bare escaped death oft before

So many prayers were said for you

Your birth was from death even more

Than most of your kind ever knew

You never knew your mother?s kiss

Nor could you know I wasn't she

And never did you challenge this

As being what your life should be

Though you were sick and oft in pain

You met each day with strength anew

And never did you once complain

Of all your illness put you through

You gave me hope, when every morn

I?d come to see, with bated breath

For fear this was the day I'd mourn

To see if you had escaped death

For years now you had grown so strong

That each day I felt more assured

That we had overcome the wrong

Through love and faith we had endured

I called to you, but no reply

And knew my heart was soon to break

Only death could part you and I

And this was more than I can take.

The following quote is from a speech by Chief Seattle in 1854. I think it says a lot about fundamental stewardship ;

"How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land ? The idea is     strange to us. Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine     needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing and      humming insect is holy . .If we sell you land, you must remember that it is sacred, and you must teach     your children that it is sacred, . .And what is humanity without the beast ? If all the beasts were gone, humanity would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to humans. All things are connected. This we know. The earth does not belong to humanity, humans belong to the earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. All things are connected."

Promise Yourself

Promise yourself to be so strong

That nothing can disturb your peace of mind

To talk health, happiness and prosperity

To every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel

That there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything

And make your optimism come true.

To think only the best

And expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others

As you are about your own.

To forgive the mistakes of the past

And press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times

And give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself

That you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry,

Too noble for anger, too strong for fear

And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

On May 29, 1995, under a Gemini moona beautiful LEO was born. His future was not to be the "King of Beasts",but the "King of my Heart".He was christened "Mufasa"This noble and gentle "beast",was the "Stuff that legends are made of".Not the legends of ferocity, but of docility. Not of Man-eaters, but as man's companion & friend. His powerful paws were not equippedwith the razor sharp claws of his birthright that would bring death & destruction, but they were the paws that reached out and touched the hearts of all who entered his domain. Sarabi was his pride, he was our "Pride & Joy"!She will know that every clash of thunder, will be him roaring from the heavens to tell us that he is well.It is there that he will wait patiently for us to be a family again. His funny little walk told the story of the abuse & neglect by the drug addicts who brought him into the world to sell for a quick fix.The endless sea of toys he leaves behindtells the story of how much he was loved by those who gave him protection and a home.On September 26, 1996 at 2:00 a.m.his flame was extinguished forever, but at the same time -a new star in the night sky was born.Like the memories he leaves behind,It will shine forever!
