How to Deter Exotic Pet Purchases

Our Director of Outreach Jennifer Leon sent me the following:
Helena, my former intern, shared the attached paper with me.

It’s an interesting study. The findings indicated that informing potential exotic pet purchasers about zoonotic disease risk and the potential illegality of owning said animal decreased interest in owning the animal. Whereas informing the potential buyer about conservation issues or animal welfare concerns had negligible effect.

So in summary it appears that the kind of people who would purchase an exotic pet don’t care about the welfare of the animal or how their action might harm nature, but they can be deterred from making a bad decision if they find out they could suffer from the choice.
