Fernando Vidal: Protecting Chile’s Endangered Wildlife

Fernando Vidal has dedicated the past 24 years to rescuing and protecting Chile’s endangered native wildlife. In 2000, Fernando and his wife, both former airline employees, used their life savings to purchase land and establish a reserve for animals in need. Their primary focus has been on threatened species like pumas, guiñas, pudus (the world’s smallest deer), and huemuls.

Starting with no experts to rely on, Fernando and his family have pioneered captive breeding and rehabilitation techniques for these rare animals. Some key accomplishments:

• Establishing the largest captive breeding population of pudus, with around 60 individuals
• Successfully breeding guignas in captivity, a first for Chile
• Reintroducing captive-bred guignas back into the wild in areas where they had gone extinct
• Breeding the endangered Andean huemul after previous attempts by others had failed
• Providing a safe haven for injured and orphaned wildlife brought in by authorities

Fernando’s reserve, Fauna Andina, immerses captive guignas in natural enclosures among the same habitat as wild populations. This allows the cats to maintain their hunting instincts. Strict protocols minimize human contact to avoid stress.

Funding remains an ongoing challenge, with the project supported almost entirely by Fernando’s personal income as a wildlife consultant and his savings from the days when he was a pilot. He dreams of expanding breeding enclosures but also urgently needs to hire rangers to patrol the reserve and deter poachers threatening the animals.

Despite the struggles, Fernando remains fiercely committed to saving Chile’s iconic species. His pioneering work has pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible in conserving the country’s endangered wildlife.

Fernando Vidal ha dedicado los últimos 24 años a rescatar y proteger la fauna nativa de Chile que está en peligro de extinción. En el año 2000, Fernando y su señora, ambos ex trabajadores de una aerolínea, usaron todos sus ahorros pa’ comprar un terreno y establecer una reserva pa’ los animales que necesitaban ayuda. Su enfoque principal ha sido en especies amenazadas como los pumas, las güiñas, los pudús (el ciervo más pequeño del mundo) y los huemules.

Empezando sin expertos en los cuales apoyarse, Fernando y su familia han sido pioneros en las técnicas de crianza en cautiverio y rehabilitación de estos animales tan poco comunes. Algunos de sus logros más bacanes:

• Establecer la población de pudús en cautiverio más grande, con alrededor de 60 individuos.
• Criar güiñas en cautiverio exitosamente por primera vez en Chile.
• Reintroducir güiñas nacidas en cautiverio de vuelta a la naturaleza en áreas donde habían desaparecido.
• Criar al amenazado huemul andino después de que intentos anteriores de otros habían fracasado.
• Proporcionar un refugio seguro para la fauna silvestre herida y huérfana traída por las autoridades.

La reserva de Fernando, Fauna Andina, envuelve a las güiñas en cautiverio en recintos naturales con el mismo hábitat que las poblaciones silvestres. Esto permite que los gatos mantengan sus instintos de caza. Protocolos estrictos minimizan el contacto humano pa’ evitar el estrés.

El financiamiento sigue siendo un desafío constante, con el proyecto apoyado casi en su totalidad por los ingresos personales de Fernando como consultor de vida silvestre. Él sueña con ampliar los recintos de crianza, pero también necesita con urgencia contratar guardaparques pa’ patrullar la reserva y ahuyentar a los cazadores furtivos que amenazan a los animales.

A pesar de las dificultades, Fernando sigue comprometío con salvar las especies icónicas de Chile. Su trabajo pionero ha roto los límites de lo que se creía posible en la conservación de la fauna silvestre en peligro del país.
