Shasta

SHASTA

Female Serval

4/16/91 – 10/30/10

Arrived at Big Cat Rescue  6/27/97

Shasta arrived at Big Cat Rescue 6/27/97 with Peaches and Alpha. She had been retired from breeding. She has an amazing metabolism and can eat as much as a cougar without gaining weight. She was discovered to have a rare form of Discoid Lupus for which she will have to receive medication for the rest of her life.

Shasta is up in years, but still finds the energy to be quite playful. She will take an enrichment tube and bat it around stirring up leaves and pine needles in a frenzy to keep up with it.

TRIBUTES TO SHASTA

Meredith, Volunteer Senior Keeper

I’m sorry to hear of Shasta’s passing.
She had many happy years being loved at BCR, but she is finally free.
I will miss you sweet Shasta!

Shasta had also been used at a research facility before coming here. I often wondered if the pathogens she was exposed to there could have led to her ongoing health issues. She was such a brave spirit to have endured the horrors of that kind of life, and then to have been bred incessantly before finally lucking out and ending up on Easy Street. I am so touched by all of the volunteers who make sure that cats like her have the best quality of life possible once they roll through our gates.

Shasta… I have been thinking for days as to how to honor you and my words seem not enough. I will miss visiting with you and watching you enjoy enrichment, food, or any of the lizards that made the mistake of scurrying through your home. You carried yourself, with all your issues, with just grace and dignity. You are missed but I know you are now free from pain and a cage! Run free sweet girl.

Shasta; I always marveled at your resistance. I remember worrying about your health. You’d greet me with a hiss. I was happy. That was years ago and you looked better thru the years. Getting old isn’t easy. How happy you have to be now. Hope I’ll be worthy enough to see you again. Love you

I am so sad I did not get to see her one last time. But she is in a much better place now free to be the serval she always should have been.
