2/28/2026 IUCN develops and publishes practical resources, guidelines, and training materials to support practitioners, policymakers, and institutions in strengthening their strategies to prevent and mitigate human–wildlife conflict — whether involving elephants, large carnivores, or small cats.

One of their flagship products is the IUCN Human–Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence Guidelines. They have become the most downloaded and widely used guidelines within IUCN, and are increasingly referenced internationally. A project coordinated by Mariam Weston of the Ocelot Working Group focuses on translating these guidelines into multiple languages to make them accessible to practitioners around the world, particularly in regions where English is not widely used.

Recently, a biologist from Iran generously volunteered her time to translate the guidelines into Persian at no cost. Mariam has since volunteered substantial time to working closely with her to prepare the translation for publication. We believe it could be highly impactful in regions where human–carnivore conflict is significant — including areas home to species such as the Pallas’s cat, snow leopard, and cheetah. This funding of $1000 was necessary to formally publish the Persian version with a DOI and the necessary evaluation metrics. (DOI is Digital Object Identifier, a permanent, unique alphanumeric code that ensures a publication can always be reliably located and cited online, even if the web address changes.
